Inkspirations-RecoveryAre you like everyone else, needing to de-stress? Do you struggle with negative self-talk, or the need to be perfect, or maybe you’re looking for a new way to fill time and space in your life—preferably a creative one? For some time, therapists, some say even Carl Jung, have been prescribing coloring as one of their healing tools. And with every book, big box, and arts-and-crafts store offering endless bins of coloring books, a new release or simple joy is at your beck and call. Even better, there’s a new one designed especially for people in recovery that not only features beautiful images but soothing words and affirmations inspired by the Twelve Steps. Inkspirations for Recovery (HCI Books) has arrived.

Recovery icon Rokelle Lerner, best known for Daily Affirmations for Adult Children of Alcoholics, the author on the book said, “The effect of coloring on the brain is amazing for relieving stress, which is key in the healing process of anyone suffering from addiction.” Now Senior Clinical Advisor of Eric Clapton’s treatment center, Crossroads Centre Antigua, Lerner adds, “I’m thrilled to be associated with the first book in the Inkspirations line and plan on incorporating the coloring books in my practice.”

Apparently, renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung prescribed coloring to his patients to calm and center their minds in the early 1900’s. Now the trend is booming for its stress-reducing, calming, and meditative qualities. Mandalas, which are popular in the current coloring books, were largely the designs used in Jung’s work and there are many different types of mandalas in this recovery book.

“We’re living in a world where everything points to a keyboard and a screen, whether it fits in the palm of our hands like a smart phone or sits on our desk,” said HCI President and Publisher, Peter Vegso. “Every now and then we need to move away from our gadgets and revive ourselves. I think the coloring craze is a direct reaction to electronics taking over our lives.”

While we’re increasingly more wired to the wireless, science shows that picking up a pencil has a unique brain-stimulating effect. Coloring is often done with pencils, so shares this benefit to the brain.

Said Judy Clement Wall, Inkspirations illustrator, “One of the best parts of coloring is that you can’t get it wrong. Inside the lines, outside the lines, the possibilities are endless.” Wall adds, “It’s amazing the variety I’ve seen from different people coloring the same design.”

The adult coloring book trend is already white hot and Amazon’s bestseller list shows half of its books in this genre. HCI Books is choosing now to offer the recovery community its own therapeutic edition. Meditation and yoga are now staples in the addictions treatment world, and it’s likely that coloring will become another essential part of the healing process.
