i reckon i need to try to understand the difference between theory and practice before i can understand how to use each. when i think of theory, i think of tested general propositions, commonly regarded as correct, that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction for a class of phenomena. when i think of practice, i think of habitual or customary performance; operation, performin or doin somethin habitually. now that i understand what each mean, i can attempt to use each in my recovery. im an engineer tech, mech engineer, tool maker, machinist by trade. ive known many, other engineers, who have never ever stepped out onto a shop floor and actually do what they learned in their studies to become engineers. sure, they know the terminology and can spout out book meanin, but for them to actually put the theory they understand so well into practical use, hell man theyd probably lose a finger, hand, or arm. they simply do not understand the practice of the theory they know so well. just like my recovery, i may know the spiritual terms very well, but until i actually put them into practice in my daily life, thats just what they are, theory. the practical use of those theoretical terms is where i skin my knees, bruise my ego, and actually learn just what they mean. ive known many in the rooms who shout the spiritual principles from atop a pulpit, know the big book word for word, from cover to cover, yet come in every other week gettin a new token to restart their recovery. what do they lack, what cant they get? why is the spiritual theory behind each principle so hard for them to practice? idk their answers for those questions, but i do know from my own experience if i dont try to actually practice honesty, hope, faith, courage, integrity, willingness, humility, brotherly love, justice, perseverance, spiritual awareness, or service, i aint ever gonna get to the solution of my alcoholism. i want to be an example of livin the theory through practical use of the spiritual principles of recovery. i want to experience the spirituality the program of recovery offers so i may find a solution to my alcoholism. i get to do that when i put each spiritual theoretical principle into practice with action in my life daily. 1 day @ a time...
