my sponsor taught me that just as every group ought to be fully self supportin, i should also work toward the same. it doesnt mean that i cannot rely upon my fellows in recovery, recovery itself, or my HP, it just means that i live a self supportin way of life. he asked me how many times in the past had i leaned on another for all the wrong reasons. he told me it was time to support myself financially, without the help of others. this meant i had to learn how to budget my finances and pay my bills accordingly. it means i had to be held accountable for the way i spent the money i did bring in through an honest means. of course, i had no idea how to do this. my sponsor helped me make a budget to follow based on my current income and helped me pay bills i had in arrears. he also taught me how to save money, for those times when i may run short. of course, this helped me in the areas of accountability and responsibility. these were 2 spiritual principles i needed work on. the concept of bein self supportin helped me learn how to be financially responsible and fiscally accountable. it wasnt somethin i expected from recovery, however, it helped me immensely. it broadened my horizons into other areas of life where recovery helped me. i aint sayin im some financial genius today, because i sho the fuck aint, all im tryin to convey is that bein self supportin brought me a certain freedom i wasnt expectin from recovery. ive learned that if im to be successful in recovery, i can also be successful when it comes to money. its been quite some time since ive had borrow money from a friend that may have the potential to harm a relationship ive worked hard to repair. and i think this is the essence of bein self supportin, the ability to be comfortable and live within my means. 1 day @ a time...
